NEW DELHI: India will be the "Guest of Honour Country" at the prestigious Frankfurt Book Fair this year, the first country to be accorded the honour twice. The fair will focus on today's India through a series of events and activities during the line up to the big event in October. The first time India was "Guest of Honour Country" at the Frankfurt Book Fair was back in 1986. Describing it as significant news for the Indian publishing industry, National Book Trust Chairman Bipan Chandra said at a press conference here that Indian books would flood the German market between March and October, creating awareness about the kind of works being done in India as of now. Apart from visits by publishers, Indian authors too will be visiting Germany to interact with readers and promote their books. The Indian pavilion at the Frankfurt Book Fair will showcase contemporary Indian writing, culture and publishing. The 17th New Delhi World Book Fair that opens here this Friday, too, will give readers a peek into the activities being organised in Germany. Informing visitors through posters, photographs and multimedia presentations about the special status given to India will be a special pavilion, which will explain the concept of the logo as well as the various activities being planned to showcase Indian works at the book fair. While around 50 Indian publishers had taken part in the book fair last year, over 200 of them are likely to participate this time round.
