Warrants against 13 in illegal assets case

CHENNAI: A special court here has issued non-bailable warrants against 13 of the 20 persons arraigned as accused in the disproportionate wealth case against the former AIADMK Minister S. Kannappan.

Dismissing their petitions filed under Section 317 of the Code of Criminal Procedure seeking to dispense with their presence in court, Special Judge T. Mathivanan directed them to appear on January 30.

The court is to furnish copies of the charge sheet to the accused persons, who include Mr. Kannappan's wife and mother.The matter relates to a disproportionate wealth case registered against them by the Sivaganga unit of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption for an unaccounted income of Rs. 11.54 crore. The period was 1991-96 when Mr. Kannappan was a State Minister. The DVAC filed the charge sheet running to thousands of pages on June 29, 2005. Besides Mr. Kannappan, six others — Senthamarai, Balasubramani, Ganapathy, Manickam, Perumal and Dhavamani — were present in the Special Court on Wednesday.
