State Government has gone by its manifesto, says Viswanathan

It has also launched several welfare schemes, including farmers' social security scheme

KANCHEEPURAM : The Government has not only ensued 100 per cent implementation of the various schemes mentioned in its 2001 election manifesto but also launched several other welfare schemes , claimed Transport Minister R. Viswanathan.

Distribution of free notebooks , bicycles and the farmers' social security scheme were some of the schemes that were not mentioned in the manifesto, he said adding that these schemes were initiated and implemented by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

While several lakhs of students benefited by the free notebooks and cycles schemes, more than 1.37 crore farmers and agricultural labourer families stand to gain from the recently launched FSS scheme.

Bus shelter

Addressing a meeting at Tiruporur on Tuesday to mark the inauguration of a bus shelter constructed at a cost of Rs. 13.50 lakhs released from MLA Local Area Development Fund, he said effective and steadfast management of resources in the last four-and-half years led to the recovery of State Transport Corporations from red.

Prudent handling of day-to-day affairs with able guidance and instructions from the Chief Minister had helped the corporation's to operate their services without hiking fares. . Diesel price was increased 17 times when the DMK supported BJP-led National Democratic Alliance ruled the country.

Similarly, the price was hiked five times after the DMK supported Congress-led United Progressive Alliance came to power at the Centre in 2004.

The Minister also inaugurated four new routes through Tiruporur: Thirukazhukundram-Chennai; Kalpakkam-Kelambakkam; Kalpakkam-Mamallapuram-Chennai and Thirukazhukundram- Kelambakkam.

Handloom Minister V.Somasundaram said the proposal for widening and strengthening of Anumanthapuram-Chengalpattu Road and strengthening of the Chengalpattu-Tiruporur Road were under active consideration.

Financial assistance under the Farmers' Social Security Scheme and Two Girl Children Scheme were distributed.
