NMP sixth among

major ports

MANGALORE: The New Mangalore Port (NMP) is ranked sixth among major ports in the country, Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust P. Tamilvannan has said. Delivering his address at the Republic Day celebrations organised at NMPT Stadium at Panambur near here on Thursday, he said the NMP held the ninth rank earlier. The rise is owing to the efforts of workers, labour unions, port users and service providers. He recalled the vision and sincerity of purpose of late U. Srinivas Mallya, architect of the Mangalore Harbour Project. — Staff Correspondent

Miracle may happen: Anjana Murthy

SHIMOGA: The Minister for Housing and Minister in charge of Shimoga district Anjana Murthy said here on Thursday that he expects a miracle to save the coalition government. Mr. Anjana Murthy, who was here to participate in the Republic Day celebrations, told presspersons the Congress is prepared to play the role of an Opposition party if Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh loses the vote of confidence. "We will be glad to win after gaining support for the motion. We will also be equally glad if we don't get it (support)," he said. He said the Janata Dal (S) has sacrificed its principles to align with the Bharatiya Janata Party. — Special Correspondent

Handicrafts show inaugurated

SHIMOGA: Deputy Commissioner T.K. Anilkumar inaugurated "Sahyadri 2006", a four-day exhibition and sale of goods and handicrafts made by members of self-help groups under the Swarna Jayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana, at the Gandhi Mandir here on Thursday. He hoped the exhibition will provide an opportunity to rural artisans to showcase their work.

CHIKMAGALUR: Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda visited Sringeri on Thursday along with his wife, Chennamma. They offered prayers at Sri Sharada Temple and took part in "homas." Mr. Gowda had a closed door meeting with Sri Bharathi Theertha Swamy of Sri Sharada Peeta.

Kannada and culture directory launched

Bidar: Shantarasa, who will preside over the 72nd Akhila Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, launched Kannada Dim Dima, a directory of Kannada and culture brought out by the Bidar Zilla Barahagarara Mattu Kalavaidara Sangha in Bidar on Thursday. It contains information about the evolution of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat and other Kannada organisations. Copies are available at the sangha office here, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

`STONA' from

BANGALORE: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi will inaugurate "STONA-2006", the seventh international granites and stone fair, at Palace Grounds here on February 1. Over 1,600 stalls, including 45 by companies from other countries, will be put up on 30 acres on the sprawling grounds to showcase varieties of granites, marbles, sandstone and slates. A large display of quarrying and processing machinery and other equipment will be on display. As many as 200 delegates from abroad are expected to attend the fair.

Course in Community Cardiology

MANGALORE: The Omega Hospital here has been permitted by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) to start a postgraduate course in Community Cardiology. The IGNOU has started the course in four centres. According to Chief Cardiologist of the hospital K. Mukund, who is the chairman of the programme centre, the two-year course will help impart skills related to non-invasive cardiology. The hospital will pay a monthly stipend of Rs. 8,000 in the first year and Rs. 10,000 in the second year. The course fee is Rs. 15,000 for the first year and Rs. 30,000 for the second year.

Man electrocuted

RAICHUR: Yellappa (22), son of Shivappa, was electrocuted when he came into contact with a live wire near a lamppost while he was going to his fields at Galag village in Deodurga taluk on Wednesday. The Jalahalli Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Killed in accident

RAICHUR: Hanumantha (55), son of Amateppa, was killed on the spot when a tractor knocked him down on the Lingsugur-Honnalli road on Wednesday. The Lingsugur police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Cash stolen

RAICHUR: Miscreants entered the house of Srinivas Rao at Radhakrishna Camp in Manvi taluk on Wednesday and escaped with Rs. 8,000. The Sirwar police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Chloral hydrate seized

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Nagappa (55), son of Narasanna, and Urukunda (19), son of Bazarappa, and recovered 500 grams of chloral hydrate used in manufacturing spurious toddy from them at Nelhal village near here on Wednesday. They have been remanded in judicial custody. The Yergera Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Gambling

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Gudusab and five others in Mudgal town, Nazeer in Raichur city and Zilanimiya in Gonal village of Sindhanur taluk on Wednesday on the charge of gambling and recovered Rs. 57,000 from them. All of them have been remanded in judicial custody.

Cases have been registered at the Mudgal police station, the Netajinagar police station and the Balaganur police station. — Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: The former Minister Kagodu Thimmappa inaugurated the annual horticulture and flower show at Hume Park here on Wednesday. Minister for Agriculture Marketing Prakash B. Hukkeri and senior officials of the Department of Horticulture and the zilla panchayat were present. — Staff Correspondent
