VOW TO CARE: A woman pledges to nurse the naval sapling given by Siruthuli in the city on Thursday. - Photo: K. Ananthan
COIMBATORE: Those who came to Sungam Bypass Road here on Thursday, to support Siruthuli's drive for a clean Valankulam, took home a relic - saplings raised from the seeds of a naval tree planted by Mahatma Gandhi in the city in 1934. Siruthuli distributed 210 saplings it had raised, using the naval seeds from the tree on the Government Co-operative Marketing Committee premises on Tiruchi Road.
Pledge taken
"All the VIPs and other members of the public who wanted a sapling were provided with one, but, only after they took a pledge that it would be nursed properly," the Managing Trustee of Siruthuli, Vanitha Mohan, said. The saplings were also given to trade and industrial associations. Siruthuli planned to plant 500 saplings on the bund of the Valankulam after removal of hyacinth from the tank. The bund also should be strengthened, she said.
Bird park
With the Rotary Club planning a bird park on this tank, the naval trees were expected to provide an ideal setting for micro propagation. A walkers' path has also been planned around the tank.
