Distribution of medals, assistance mark R-Day fete

Coimbatore: Welfare assistance was distributed to the poor and needy, prizes and medals presented for meritorious performance and freedom fighters honoured at the 57th Republic Day celebrations at VOC Park here on Thursday.

Collector S. Kosalaraman unfurled the Tricolour, took the salute and reviewed a ceremonial parade by police personnel.

The city police had thrown a tight security cordon in and around VOC Park area.

Police personnel equipped with binoculars kept a close vigil from high-rise buildings around the parade grounds.

The Collector distributed welfare assistance to a tune of Rs. 11.41 lakhs to 61 persons.

Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, Karan Singha, was felicitated on being conferred the President's Medal for Meritorious and Distinguished Service. Coimbatore Mayor T. Malaravan, Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, A. Subramanian, DIG of Police, Coimbatore Range, M.N. Manjunatha, and DIG of Prisons, P. Munivelu, took part.
