UPA panel discusses Bihar, Karnataka

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The core committee of the United Progressive Alliance on Thursday discussed Bihar Governor Buta Singh's resignation and the political developments in Karnataka, it is learnt.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee were among those who attended the meeting held at the residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here.

The Congress said the resignation of Mr. Buta Singh was in keeping with democratic traditions and conventions. Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said it was the height of irresponsibility on the part of political parties to pick holes.

No meaning

The Opposition demand had no meaning as the Bihar elections were held already. The Supreme Court had not stayed the polls, the final judgment had come and finally Mr. Buta Singh resigned.

Communist Party of India national secretary D. Raja said that after the indictment by the court, Mr. Buta Singh's position became untenable. Though the resignation had come a day late, it was the only way out.
