VISAKHAPATNAM: P. Praveen won the first gold medal for Andhra University in the all-India inter-university boxing championship, clinching the feather weight title in this year's edition held by the JNV University at Jadhavpur (Rajasthan) recently. AU Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy felicitated Praveen, a student of Pydah College, at a function organised in the campus. The Principal of Pydah College, M. Ramjee, Secretary of AU Sports Board M. Syam Babu and team coach Y. Sreenivasa Rao and others congratulated Praveen.
Kotak takes title
Kotak Salesian School claimed the inter-school cricket tournament, conducted by YMCA, beating Timpany School by six wickets in the final. Special awards: Man of the final: Vinod (Kotak Salesian), Best batsman: Bhargav (Bethany, Best bowler: Gowtham (Kotak Salesian), Player of the tournament: Rahul (Timpany School).
Handball tournament
The District Handball Association is organising the MAS Srinivas Challenge Trophy inter-district handball tournament for men from Feb. 2 to 4. Entries close on Feb. 1 and have to be sent to the DHA secretary, S. Appa Rao (93931-01484). Trials to select the district team for the meet will be held at 4.30 p.m. on Friday at the MCV Stadium.
