HYDERABAD: Chetan Pandit and Divya M. Rao won the boys and girls singles titles (under-14) respectively in the Maxivision Championship Series AITA sub-juniors ranking tennis tournament, organised by GVK-Pro Tennis Academy at Hitex (Madhapur) here on Thursday. Chetan defeated Karan Choudhary 6-2, 6-1 in the final and later won the doubles title too partnering S. Kaushik Reddy. Divya Rao put it across Bhavana Suresh 6-3, 6-4 to pick up the girls singles title. Other results: Boys: U-12 (Final): Arnav Kishore bt Alla Abhishek 6-7, 7-5, 6-4. SP College enters final
Sardar Patel College moved into the final with a seven-run win against Bhavan's Vivekananda college in the semifinal of the Osmania University inter-college cricket tournament for Ranga Reddy Trophy here on Thursday. The scores: SP College 250 for seven in 45 overs (Suhail Dauria 49, P. Sandeep 56, D.B. Ravi Teja 52 ) bt Bhavan's Vivekananda 243 in 44.4 overs (Anshul Lal 53).
South Zone junior golf
The eighth leg of the Indian Golf Union's (IGU) south zone junior golf championships will be conducted for boys and girls under 18 years in Bolarum on Friday and Saturday. About 40 golfers 30 of them from Bangalore, Belgaum, Chennai, Coimbatore, Mysore, and Coorg are expected to take part. In the fray will be leading young golfers such as Prabhat Jhadav, Abhinav Suresh, B. Chikka Rangappa, Trishul Chinnappa, Vasishta Pawar, Rahul Ravi and Shivnaren Srinivasan. Competitions are classified as follows: Category A: 15 to 17 years, B: 13 and 14; C: 11 & 12; D: 10 and below. Played over two days, the lowest gross score will be the winning score in each of the four sections. Hosted by Hyderabad for the first time it will become part of the IGU circuit for junior golfers. SAAP to initiate
more schemes
A high-level review meeting of the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh expressed satisfaction at the measures initiated in the last one year and assured the sporting fraternity of many more programmes for the promotion of sports in the State. The top brass of SAAP attended the meeting. The focus was not just on the infrastructure but also on supporting performing sportspersons as 52 of them were felicitated and given cash incentives totalling Rs.87 lakhs. Sportspersons were also given financial assistance of Rs.1.05 crores for those who went for training abroad. The State government also set a record of sorts by organising seven international events costing Rs. 1.56 crores besides National-level events in 23 disciplines. The Government also revived the prestigious Alluri Sitarama Raju (for best sportsman) and Rani Rudramadevi awards (best sportswoman). The other significant decisions taken include installing statues of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at Lal Bahadur Stadium and hockey legend Dhyan Chand at Gachibowli hockey complex. The meeting also expressed satisfaction that the number of SAAP Academies had gone up from 14 to 26 in the last one-year to ensure that the interests of young talent from every region in the State were taken care of.
APCA general body meeting
Andhra Pradesh Chess Association will conduct it's general body meeting on January 29 at Olympic Bhavan here from 2.00 p.m., according to K. Kanna Reddy, general secretary of APCA. All the presidents and secretaries of the district associations have been requested to attend the meeting along with their affiliation certificates to the respective District Olympic Association and the District Sports Authorities.
