Modest start by Indians

Doha: Jyoti Randhawa carded a round of one-under 71 to emerge the best among the five Indians at the $ 2 million Qatar Masters at the Doha Golf Club here.

Randhawa was tied 25th, while both Jeev Milkha Singh and Gaurav Ghei courted disaster on their closing holes with a double bogey each, dropping to par and a tie for 44th place. Shiv Kapur and Rahil Gangjee ended the day in 90th place at three-over 75, having their work cut out in the second round to make it to the weekend.

Big-hitting Argentine Ricardo Gonzalez surged to the joint lead with Swede Henrik Stenson, both shooting six-under 66 each in the first round. Thailand's Chawalit Plaphol, England amateur Danny Denison and Darren Fichardt (all 67) were tied for third. — PTI
