No response to bandh call

Bid to disrupt rail, road traffic

Raipur: The country-wide bandh by naxalites protesting the killing of tribals in the police firing at Kalinganagar in Orissa evoked no response on Thursday in urban areas of Chhattisgarh though the extremists made futile attempts to disrupt rail and road traffic in some parts of the State.

In an attempt to derail the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul passenger train, naxalites placed some sleepers on the railway track between Bacheli and Bhanti, police said.

Dantewada District Superintendent of Police, Praveer Das said the driver spotted the obstacle on the track and stopped the train last night. After clearing the track, train services were resumed, he added.

In their bid to disrupt road traffic, naxalites also fired shots at four trucks on Ambikapur-Vanarasi National Highway on Thursday, bursting their tyres, Sarguja range Inspector General of Police, Amarnath Upadhyaya said.

In Antagarh area of Bastar region, ultras blocked roads with logs, reports said. -- PTI
