MAHABUBNAGAR: Construction work pertaining to the long awaited irrigation projects in this drought prone district are in full swing, informed district Collector M. Jagadeeshwar. Addressing a gathering after unfurling the tricolour on the eve of 57th Republic Day celebrations at police parade grounds here on Thursday, he said that Government was giving top priority to the irrigation sector and as part of it several irrigation projects have been taken up with an estimated cost of Rs. 6,203 crores.
Assured water supply
The Collector said after completion of the projects some eight lakh acres would be provided with assured water in the backward district. Some 18,000 acres of land has been already acquired by paying Rs. 45 crores against the required 55,000 acres for completion of the irrigation projects. Mr. Jagadeeshwar said that he was pleased to announce that a new scheme - Andhra Pradesh rural employment assurance scheme, would be launched in the district on February 2. He said the new scheme will help in containing the migration of labour from the district. Under the scheme, a person from rural poor family will get employment at least for 100 days in a year and will get Rs. 80 per day. The Collector informed that works like rain harvesting structures, growing of plants and earth related works will be taken up and added that there will not be any role of middle men nor contraction in the scheme. He sought the cooperation of public representatives, officials and others for the success of the scheme.
Indiramma model villages
The scheme would benefit lakhs of poor families. The Government had introduced yet another new scheme -- Indiramma model villages for the comprehensive development of rural villages. The villages selected under the scheme would be provided with all basic amenities. Some 493 villages and 35 municipal wards have been identified for implementation of Indiramma model villages scheme, he said. The Collector presented commendation certificate to 265 officials from various departments. He also distributed assets worth Rs. 34.5 lakhs among the 114 beneficiaries. The District administration has recommended 10 police personnel for State level awards. The Collector and Superintendent of Police K. Srinivas Rreddy announced cash awards of Rs. 1,116 each to Lambada mahila group and R.B.C. Seva Bharathi school respectively for their best performance in the drill and cultural programme.
