CHENNAI : The Indian Army is all set to recruit more NCC cadets passing out of veterinary institutions, said NCC group commander colonel K. Bhaskar on Tuesday.

Cadets with `C' certificate will be absorbed into the Remount and Veterinary Corps, he said at the ceremony conferring honorary colonel rank (NCC) on Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University vice-chancellor N. Balaraman.

Col. Bhaskar told the gathering at Madras Veterinary College that the Army was considering appointing women cadets also.

Animal rearing

Dr. Balaraman said the defence services and police had greatly contributed to developing organised animal rearing practices and dairy cattle development in the country.

He received his epaulettes from Col. Bhaskar and Commodore PP Singh, deputy director -general of NCC directorate at a colourful function at the Madras Veterinary College, which has a unit (TN R&V SQN) comprising 200 cadets including 50 women.

The cadets, said dean P. Thangaraju, are exposed to various animal husbandry and management activities pertaining to equines and have won national honours as part of the Tamil Nadu NCC contingent.

He singled out cadet A. Sathya of the College who won the Sharma Trophy for best performance in tent pegging in 2001.
