Call to start ethics education early

Special Correspondent

Two-day seminar on bioethics

CHENNAI: A two-day seminar on "bioethics" began here on Wednesday, with speakers stressing the need for ethics education at a young age.

Catch them young should be the motto, a speaker said, pointing out that it would be the right age to grasp the message. The programme has been organised by Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University and Madras University, under the auspices of UNESCO. According to Darryl Macer of UNESCO, the seminar would examine how to apply ethical traditions to some of the new challenges facing humanity. Examples of applied ethics, including medical ethics, engineering ethics, environmental ethics and the governance of professional practice, would be examined. Bioethics education of students and citizens was required and practical examples of how to accomplish this would be explored.

Inaugurating the seminar, MGR Medical University Vice-Chancellor C.V. Bhirmanandam said ethics education should begin not from school but at home.

Madras University Vice-Chancellor S.P. Thyagarajan said professional ethics meant discipline in work place in thought and deed.
