MADURAI: After getting the Potential for Excellence recognition from the University Grants Commission, Madurai Kamaraj University is considering opening its distance education study centres in Sharjah, Melbourne and a few places in America. After the approval given by the Syndicate on Wednesday, Vice-Chancellor P. Maruthamuthu is leaving for Sharjah on February 2 to study the feasibility. Dr. Maruthamuthu told The Hindu on Thursday that the university received requests from Sharjah residents to open a centre in the region to help them join the distance education courses. The Directorate of Distance Education submitted all particulars about the Gulf region, where the university has centres in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait. The Vice-Chancellor would inspect the facilities of the private agency that had applied for authorised centre status in Sharjah.
Centre in Melbourne
The possibility of opening a centre in Melbourne would be explored during the Vice-Chancellor's visit to Australia in April to attend the Commonwealth Universities Vice-Chancellors' conference. "We are now seeing a visible difference to our brand image. Owing to the UGC's recognition, there are many requests from outside the country. However, the university will be careful," Dr. Maruthamuthu said.
