HYDERABAD: The 57th Republic Day was celebrated by various Government organisations, including banks in the city. At the Railway Recreation Grounds, SCR General Manager D.N. Mathur unfurled the tricolour and inspected the guard of honour. Listing out SCR's achievements, he said that a significant high had been achieved in originating freight loading which touched 39.71 million tonnes until December in the current financial year as against 36.01 million tonnes for the corresponding period last year, leading to an increase of Rs.490.86 crores in the earnings.
Impressive march past
Director of Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy Kamal Kumar unfurled the National Flag and reviewed the parade. Chairperson and Managing Director of Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited Rachel Chatterjee said the power utilities have undertaken a special challenge of reducing the T & D losses to 18 per cent in the coming financial year, while addressing the gathering during Republic Day celebrations. A massive investment of Rs.2,260 crores was planned to be spent for system improvement up to 2008-09. She said it was proposed to declare 2006-07 as "year for quality assurance".
Banks' role
Addressing the staff after hoisting the tricolour, Andhra Bank Chairman and Managing Director K. Ramakrishnan said that banks have to play the role of catalysts in the country's economic development. At the head office of State Bank of Hyderabad, the bank's MD Amitabha Guha hoisted the National Flag and addressed the gathering. As a special gesture for benefit of women prisoners, SBH donated a colour television and CD player to the Chenchalguda Central Prison for Women. At the Hyderabad Collectorate, District Collector Arvind Kumar unfurled the national flag before distributing merit certificates to 119 officials and staff members working in the Collectorate, district and mandal revenue offices for their outstanding performance. The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad's Republic Day celebrations began with Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Jaju hoisting the tricolour in the presence of Mayor Teegala Krishna Reddy, deputy mayor Subhash Chanderji, corporators and senior officials. Earlier, Mr. Krishna Reddy felicitated 25 officials of the Town Planning, Engineering, Horticulture and Sanitation wings. Among the other institutions, departments and organisations that observed the patriotic occasion were the Central Power Distribution Company of AP Limited, South Central Railway's Railway Junior College, Oasis School and the All India Urdu Educational Committee, according to separate press releases. B.V. Mohan Reddy, Telugu Desam Party's senior vice-president hoisted the tri-colour at the party headquarters in Banjara Hills in the absence of party president N. Chandrababu Naidu who is away in Switzerland.
