HYDERABAD: Piracy, often associated with the film and publishing industries, now seems to have entered the relatively little known field of jewellery catalogues. The Kachiguda police on Thursday arrested Rishabh alias Sudhir Jain on the charge of pirating a jewellery catalogue brought out by the Hyderabad-based Mulka designers and publishers. While the catalogue of Mulka designers was priced at Rs. 1,400 a copy, Sudhir Jain was allegedly selling each pirated copy for Rs. 1,000. According to Mulka designer's director M. Ravindranath, his was the only firm in Hyderabad publishing jewellery catalogues. Earlier, he brought out three editions. The catalogue contains photos of different designs of gold ornaments and addresses of some jewellery shops that sponsor its publication. These catalogues are sold to jewellers all over the State. Instead of keeping samples of all designs, jewellery shop owners show the catalogues to customers offering a wide choice and prepare ornaments to order. On learning about the piracy, Mr Ravindranath filed a petition in a local court here seeking directions to the Kachiguda police to initiate action against Sudhir Jain. Based on the court order, police raided Sudhir Jain's shop at Ghansi Bazar and took him into custody on Wednesday evening. The accused reportedly told the police that he got the catalogue printed with the help of one Ketan Jain, who was absconding. Some 60 pirated catalogues were seized from his possession.
