Distribution of medals, assistance marks R-Day fete

City Police Commissioner Karan Singha felicitated; tight security around the venue

Coimbatore: Collector S. Kosalaraman unfurled the Tricolour, took the salute and reviewed a ceremonial parade by police personnel at the 57th Republic Day celebrations at VOC Park here on Thursday.

He distributed welfare assistance to a tune of Rs. 11.41 lakhs to 61 persons and also gave away financial assistance for higher education and commendation certificates to toppers in SSLC and HSLC examinations from the families of policemen.

Freedom fighters were also honoured on the occasion.

Commissioner of Police, Karan Singha, was felicitated on being conferred the President's Medal for Meritorious and Distinguished Service.

Fifty-nine police personnel received medals for meritorious service, 12 from Social Welfare Department, 29 from Public Health Department and Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, and four from the social welfare and noon meal scheme.

A total of 1,090 students from 12 educational institutions presented cultural events. The city police had thrown a tight security cordon in and around VOC Park area.

Police personnel equipped with binoculars kept a close vigil from high-rise buildings around the parade grounds.

Coimbatore Mayor T. Malaravan, Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, A. Subramanian, DIG of Police, Coimbatore Range, M.N. Manjunatha, and DIG of Prisons, P. Munivelu, took part.

At Corporation

At the Corporation, the Mayor unfurled the National Flag and garlanded the Gandhi statue.

He gave away certificates to members of the volley ball team from the City Corporation School who won the State-level volley ball contest.

At the Sainik School at Amaravathy Nagar in Udumalpet, Commander Alokesh Sen, Principal, hoisted the Tricolour and took the salute.
