BANGALORE: A good turnout by members of the public and a cultural pageantry presented by schoolchildren marked the 57th Republic Day celebrations at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground here on Thursday. As many as 2,250 schoolchildren drawn from various schools, attired in clothes of various colours danced on the Parade Ground to the melody of patriotic songs. The good number of seats reserved for freedom fighters and VIPs were full. The police had made security arrangements. This time, there was not much variety in the cultural programmes. Schools run by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, apart from the regular participants from among schools, were represented at the pageantry. Contingents from the Air Force, Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police, Railway Protection Force, Karnataka State Reserve Police, City Armed Reserve, Home Guards, National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme, Bharat Seva Dal and State Excise were among those who participated in the march past. The programme commenced with Governor T.N. Chatuvedi's address at 9 a.m. and went on for nearly two hours. Children of St. Lawrence High School, Kamakshipalya, walked away with the first prize in the cultural programme category for their dance "Janapada Kunita." The dance depicted the richness of car festivals and the harvest season in rural areas. It was choreographed by their teachers, M.R. Rangaswamy and M. Ramadevi. About 550 children of six government high schools located in Palace Guttahalli, Seshadripuram and Malleswaram presented the dance "Kannada Deepa" to receive the second prize. Students of MEC High School, Yelahanka, staged a "Namma Desha" dance and bagged third prize. About 600 children of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Bagalur, and 600 students of a Bangalore Mahanagara Palike school, presented the dance "Vishwamanya Nammanadu" and "Vasantha Ruthu" respectively, to share the fourth prize. The other prize-winning contingents and schools are Group One: Border Security Force first, Air Force second, and City Armed Reserve Police third. Group Two: Traffic Warden first, State Excise second, and Karnataka Fire Force wing third. Group Three: NSS Girls first, Students' Association for Road Safety (Little Flower School) second, and Bharat Seva Dal (Girls) third. Group Four: NCC Girls first, NCC Senior (Airwing) second and Red Cross third. Group Five: Ramana Maharshi School for the Blind first, Hamsadwani School for the Deaf second, and Samarthanam Trust for Disabled third; and Group Six: Karnataka State Reserve Police first, Students' Association for Road Safety second, and Bharat Seva Dal (Tilak Memorial School) third. The Governor gave away the prizes.
