Immolation bid outside PM's residence

NEW DELHI: A 27-year-old man allegedly faked a self-immolate bid outside Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's 7 Race Course residence here on Thursday. He was overpowered by Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel and handed over to the police.

Around 2 p.m., Nimish Nathuji Baghre from Nagpur in Maharashtra approached some security personnel deployed near Mr. Singh's residence seeking help in submitting an application to the Prime Minister. He wanted a job on compassionate grounds as his father had died way back in 1994 while in service with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited.

Nimish then allegedly poured some liquid over himself as if he was attempting self-immolation, but the SPG personnel overpowered him.

Nimish had come to the Capital on Thursday morning from Nagpur and headed straight towards the Prime Minister's residence.

Four held in double murder case

NEW DELHI: Four persons, including a woman, have been arrested in connection with Tuesday's double murder of two middle-aged women at Mandawali in East Delhi. At their instance, the police have also recovered the victims' Santro car in which the accused had fled after committing the crime.

It is learnt that the accused were arrested from Agra in Uttar Pradesh. From them, the police recovered the car belonging to Premlata Choudhary (55) and Nisha alias Saroj Sharma (45). During interrogation, the woman allegedly revealed that she knew the victims for the past one year and was under the impression that they possessed a huge amount of cash. As such she hatched a plan and roped in the other three accused. Then all four of them went to the Madhu Vihar residence of Premlata and Nisha on Monday evening.

Civilian aircraft

flies over Rajpath

NEW DELHI: A civilian aircraft on Thursday flew over Rajpath during the Republic Day celebrations when President A P J Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud were among the dignitaries present.

The aircraft made its appearance a few minutes before the scheduled flypast by Air Force jets towards the fag end of the parade.

Appearing from the Rashtrapati Bhawan side, it flew right over Rajpath, a no-fly zone, at an altitude believed to be in a safe corridor higher than the path of Air Force fighter jets participating in a flypast.

Air Traffic Control and central security agencies confirmed that there was no violation of airspace.

In a no-fly-zone, aircraft is not allowed to descend below the altitude of 20,000 feet.

Uniform calling rate launch deferred

NEW DELHI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's much-awaited plan to launch a countrywide uniform calling rate that would have reduced STD rates by 70 per cent from Republic Day was called off due to technical and legal difficulties.

A last-ditch meeting on Wednesday did not agree on announcing the tariff without adequate preparation and indications are that this plan might be implemented around March.

Communications and IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran had backed the uniform call rate plan to boost telecom penetration by clearing aberrations in the policy.
