BANGALORE: Participants at a seminar on the `Role of information technology in hi-tech agriculture and horticulture' held here on Friday favoured developing more modern equipment and gadgets to help farmers get a better yield. "Information technology has to still reach the villages. IT should be used extensively for the benefit of farmers for better production," President of The Institution of Engineers S.C. Naik said. The seminar was organised by the Agricultural Engineering Division of The Institution of Engineers. Dean of Agricultural Engineering, College and Research Institute, Coimbatore, R. Manian said there was more scope for using IT in providing long-term solutions to various challenges in the agricultural sector. This will help farmers get a better yield as well as provide accessibility to market rates of various farm produce, Dr. Manian added.
Internet
He said that the advent of Internet had helped in sharing of information and mutual communication between agricultural experts. He also pointed out that IT had helped in predicting crop growth. "This information can be very vital for farmers for planning the variety of crops on their land," Dr. Manian said.
Felicitated
Deputy Director-General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research Nawab Ali was felicitated on the occasion in recognition of his contribution to the field of agriculture. Chairman of The Institution of Engineers B.N. Thyagaraja, Secretary M. Chowde Gowda and Chairman of Agricultural Engineering Division of The Institution of Engineers Nutan Kumar Dash spoke.
