dated January 28, 1956: Nation celebrates R-Day

Appeals from leaders for solidarity among the people and elimination of parochial tendencies formed the keynote of the observance of the sixth anniversary of the Republic Day on January 26. Lakhs of Delhi citizens participated in the celebrations with enthusiasm. The President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, took the salute at the Republic Day parade and march-past of the armed forces, security services and civilians. The march-past was immediately followed by a colourful pageant of tableaux representing the life and culture in various parts of the country, an effective embodiment of the slogan "Unity in diversity." The function ended with an impressive fly-past by about 120 aircraft - half of them jets - of the Indian Air Fore. Thousands of citizens watched the parade at the central vista. Hundreds of thousands more lined up the eight-mile route of the march past. In special enclosures on both sides of the President's dais were the Vice-President, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, and other distinguished guests. The President arrived in state, driving in the state coach, and was received by Prime Minister Nehru, and the Defence Minister, Dr. K.N. Katju.
