NEW DELHI:
Taking suo motu cognisance of a newspaper report on farmers in Maharashtra deciding to sell their kidneys for a living, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report from the State Government on the issue.
Observing that if the contents of the report were correct, it raised a serious issue concerning the rights of the farmers, the NHRC has asked for comments from the Government within two weeks.
The news report had said the farmers and village elders of Shingnapur in Amaravati district passed a resolution at a meeting on January 15 to offer their kidneys for sale to raise money for their next crop. Their action followed an alleged suicide by a farmer after failure of the cotton crop. They also displayed a banner reading "Farmers' kidneys for sale."
