NEW DELHI: The National Cadet Corps has over the years proved that the nation can depend on it in times of crisis, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Friday. "Be it the heavy rain in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra recently or the devastating earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir or, for that matter, the tsunami tragedy in south India, the cadets have always risen to the occasion.'' Addressing the Prime Minister's Rally on the Garrison Parade Ground here, Dr. Singh said: "I am sure that during the past 27 days at the NCC camp, the cadets must have realised that though their language, customs, clothes and eating habits are different, their cultural values are the same." He congratulated woman cadet Tsering Ladol on scaling Mount Everest. The Prime Minister presented the Champion Directorate Trophy to Juo Renu E. Mane of Maharashtra. The Prime Minister's banner also went to that State. Earlier, the cadets gave a para-sailing display and flew microlight aircraft, besides presenting a cultural programme. On display were tableaux on disaster management, ecology and environment, and communal harmony.
