Lakhera for improving ties with France

Staff Reporter

`The need of the hour is to encourage people-to-people level contacts rather than at Government level' "A strong friendship could help in developing the territory"

PONDICHERRY: Concerted efforts should be taken by the Government and individuals to generate affinity among the younger generation to improve the ties with France, the Lt. Governor M. M. Lakhera said here today

"The older generation still has the feeling and affinity. But the feeling is fading among the younger generation. It cannot be allowed to fade," the Governor said in his inaugural address at the Indo-French Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on "IVIG in Autoimmune and Inflammatory Disorders: Current Situation and Future Prospects", at JIMER.

More steps needed to be taken to foster friendship between France and Pondicherry. A strong friendship could help in developing the territory, he added.

"Pondicherry has been called as the window to France. There is ample scope for economic activity but nothing much has happened", he further added.

The need of the hour was to encourage people-to-people level contacts rather than Government-to-Government contact, which are formal, he said.

On IVIG treatment, Dr A K Das, medical superintendent of JIPMER said the institute administers it free of cost to needy patients. "The treatment is bit expensive and on an average we spend Rs 1.5 lakh per patient. (The latest entry into the treatment of immunology disease, IVIG, is a solution of globulins containing antibodies normally present in adult human blood. Globulins are simple proteins that provide immunity against disease. Many globulins are inherited, so that the body is able to fight bacteria and other infections. IVIG is used for treatment of people who are unable to produce sufficient amounts of immune globulin antibodies.) The treatment can help prevent or treat infections such as meningitis, bacteremia, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, acute sinusitis, pneumonia, acute mastoiditis, or abscess of an internal organ. Dr K S V K Subba Rao, Director, JIPMER said since the treatment is costly choosing the most deserved patients is very important.
