A `rowing' success at the Utsav

500-odd oarsmen fight it to the finish line at the end of the four-day Godavari fest


  • Minister, local MLA and city Mayor flag off the boating competition
  • Race held between Arthur Cotton Bridge and Road-cum-Rail Bridge

    Rajahmundry: Boating competitions across the Godavari stole the show on the final day of Godavari Utsav on Friday. The contest was flagged off two hours behind schedule by Minister for Roads and Buildings J. Ramamohana Rao, MLA Rowthu Suryaprakash Rao and Mayor M.S. Chakravarti. Despite the delay, people thronged the Pushkara Ghat.

    About 500 fishermen participated in 289 country boats in the four events in the race. The race was conducted between Sir Arthur Cotton Bridge (old bridge) and Road-cum-Rail Bridge. Mr. Ramamohana Rao flagged off the first event in the competition, in which, 180 country boats, with one fisherman each, participated.

    The organizers of Godavari Utsav announced Rs.5,000 and Sir Arthur Cotton Sailing and Health Facility Rolling shield as first prize. In the second event, 195 fishermen rowed to the finishing line in 39 long boats (five in one boat) decorated colourfully with flags and ribbons. Rs. 3,000 and River Bay Rolling shield was announced as first prize in the competitions.

    Yachting was the third event in which 60 yachts participated, with two in each yacht. For this event, Water Village Rolling shield and Rs. 3,000 was the first prize.

    Small boats too

    Small boat contests were the last in which 10 fishermen, each one in one boat participated and Rajahmahendri Resorts Rolling shield and Rs. 3,000 cash award was announced as first prize.

    Municipal Commissioner C. Sudarshan Reddy and Fisheries Department assistant director P. Jayarao supervised the events.
