Kakinada: Scientist B. L. Deekshitulu from the University of Hyderabad, a Padmasri awardee, has called upon students to give a major thrust to rural development by applying information technology. Inaugurating `Concours-2006' a national-level technical fiesta organised by students of Kakinada Institute of Engineering and Technology (KIET) here on Friday, he said all the benefits of technical and scientific advancement should reach people in the rural areas. Delivering a lecture on `Remote sensing-Eye of the sky', Dr. Deekshitulu said remote sensing was a good tool and could be used for various applications in agriculture, forestry, land use, ground and surface water, oceanography, geology and meteorology. He said India's Department of Science was among the top five in the world in using satellite remote sensing.
CSI award instituted
D.V.R. Vithal, Fellow, Computer Society of India-Hyderabad announced the institution of an award in the name of R. Narasimhan, founder president of CSI, which would be given to a meritorious student every year from the CSI chapter. C.R. Muthukrishnan, former Deputy Director IIT Chennai, C.R. Chakravarty, former Director DRDO, New Delhi, spoke. K.N.V. Prasada Rao, Director Academic and K. Surayya, Director of the KIET attended.
