ERODE: The Madras High Court has granted time till March 31 for installation of reverse osmosis plants in the tanneries and textile dyeing and processing industries in Erode, said the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, at the agriculture grievances meeting conducted in the Collectorate on Friday. The president of the Kalingarayan Farmers Association, V.M. Velayutham, complained that some tanners and dyers were discharging untreated waste into the Kalingarayan canal and also into the Cauvery river. Because of heavy inflow into the Cauvery river, the contaminated water discharged by the tanners had been flushed out.
Shifting of units sought
Mr. Velayutham said even after installation of RO plants, the tanners and dyers would continue to discharge the waste into the canal and the river. So, he wanted the Collector to instruct the dyers and tanners to shift their industries to Perundurai Industrial Growth Centre. The Collector said the High Court had given time till March 31 for installation of RO plant. This does not mean that the tanners and dyers had been allowed to discharge the effluents. He said if they continue to discharge effluents, stringent action would be taken against them, including closure of units. The Collector said already several unauthorised dyeing units had been closed. The Revenue, PWD and the Pollution Control Board had been geared up to monitor the installation of the RO plants. He said already notices had been issued to the industries, which had not started preliminary work.
