JD(S) MLAs kept their word, says Venkaiah Naidu

`The Governor should invite Kumaraswamy to form a government'

BANGALORE: Bharatiya Janata Party leader M. Venkaiah Naidu has expressed happiness that the Janata Dal (Secular) legislators under the leadership of H.D. Kumaraswamy kept their word not to allow relations between the two parties to be affected.

He was speaking to presspersons after Legislative Assembly Speaker Krishna recognised Mr. Kumaraswamy as leader of the Janata Dal (S) Legislature Party.

On the pandemonium in the House over Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh not tabling a motion of confidence and the dharna by Congress leaders, he said Ministers disregarded decorum in their behaviour towards the Speaker. He said the Congress has not learnt a lesson from the ignominy it suffered in Jharkhand and Bihar. Friday's incidents will further damage the image of the Congress. It was a bad day for democracy, he added.

Mr. Naidu said Congress leaders and Ministers should have advised Mr. Dharam Singh to table the motion of confidence. But instead, they sought support of MLAs. Mr. Dharam Singh did not table the motion though the Speaker repeatedly asked him to do so, he added.

Mr. Naidu urged Governor T.N. Chaturvedi to dismiss the Government and invite Mr. Kumaraswamy to form a government. He said leaders of the BJP and the Janata Dal (S) will meet the Governor and stake claim to form the government. The Governor is duty-bound to invite Mr. Kumaraswamy to form the government, he added.

Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly B.S. Yediyurappa said Mr. Singh should have resigned on January 19 when only 65 MLAs were present in the House.
