Five-storey

building caves in

NEW DELHI: A five-storey under construction building collapsed in a South Delhi area on Friday while it was being pulled down by MCD demolition squads.

However, no casualties have been reported as there was nobody in the building at the time of the incident and the neighbouring areas were also largely uninhabited, fire force officials said.

Cultural programme

NEW DELHI: India's Republic Day was celebrated at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture here on January 25. The function was organised jointly by the Centre and the Indian Friendship Societies, Associations and Clubs.

While Delhi Transport and Power Minister Haroon Yusuf was the chief guest, the newly elected Rajya Sabha member Jai Prakash Agrawal presided. Young artistes from Blue Star Club and children of Russian School presented a colourful cultural programme.

NEW DELHI: LinuxAsia 2006, Asia's premier Open Source conference and exposition, will be held here from February 8 to 10. The Nilekani Chair Professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, Deepak Phatak, will inaugurate the convention.

Panel discussion on cardiac chest pain

NEW DELHI: Chewing 300 mg aspirin at the onset of stroke can save lives, said Dr. K. K. Aggarwal, President of Delhi Medical Association, at a panel discussion here on Friday.

Defining stroke, Dr. Aggarwal said it occurs due to formation of a clot in the channels supplying blood to any vital organ. Heart attack and brain attack are the two most important common strokes. "Chewing 300 mg aspirin at the onset of cardiac chest pain can reduce the chances of immediate death by up to 20 per cent. Similarly, chewing 300 mg aspirin at the onset of paralysis or brain attack can reduce paralysis mortality by a similar percentage."

Picnic party for children

NEW DELHI: Thalassemics Indian has organised a picnic party for children suffering from the genetic disorder and their parents at Nehru Park here this coming Sunday.

A child suffering from thalassemia is unable to maintain normal haemoglobin level and the treatment available for this disorder is very taxing, traumatic and expensive.
