Make preliminary check on applications, poll officials told
Special Correspondent
Naresh Gupta
CHENNAI:
Apprehending attempts to stuff the electoral rolls, the State Elections Department has asked the district election officers to "exercise strict vigil and closely monitor the process."
Though the filing of bulk applications has been banned, it is likely that applications may still be organised in bulk but shown to be presented as individual applications, Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said in a release. Any irregularity or lapse on the part of the officials would result in disciplinary action by the Election Commission, he warned. Only a claimant or a member of his or her family should file the application.
All the Electoral Registration Officers had been instructed to do a preliminary check of every form to ensure all relevant columns were filled up. In the case of applicants belonging to those in the age-group of 18-20, a copy of the birth or school certificate, or an affidavit from either of the parents, should be filed.
The official who received the application for inclusion or deletion should indicate his name and designation and put his initial along with the date of receipt for future verification.
