Resignation demanded

CHENNAI: The Supreme Court's censure of the State Government on the MGR Nagar stampede issue has prompted the Opposition to demand the resignation of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi said the Chief Minister had no moral right to continue in the post. She should follow the example set by Bihar Governor Buta Singh who resigned on Thursday in the wake of the Court's indictment of him for the dissolution of the Bihar Assembly last year. Recalling that Ms. Jayalalithaa did not heed the demand of the Congress and the resolution of the Democratic Progressive Alliance earlier, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief G.K. Vasan said she had no right to remain in the post "even for a minute" with the Apex Court blaming the Government.

G.K. Mani, Pattali Makkal Katchi president, said, "The judicial pronouncement has only reinforced the contention of the PMK and others that the Jayalalithaa regime is full of administrative lapses."

D. Pandian, State secretary of the Communist Party of India, said it was the duty of the State Government to respect the ruling of the Apex Court.

N. Varadarajan, secretary of the State committee of the CPI (Marxist), said the Supreme Court's censure was yet another proof of the contention that the State Government had been wreaking revenge on the Opposition.
