Meet on emerging infectious diseases opens

CHENNAI: An international symposium on "Emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in the era of immuno-suppression" and the first zonal conference of the Society for Indian Human and Animal Mycology (SIHAM) was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala.

The three-day symposium is being conducted at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (SRMMCHRC), Kattankulathur. It will highlight the recent advances in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infections that micro-organisms, mainly bacteria, fungal parasites and viruses cause leading to life threatening conditions, especially in immuno-compromised patients.

The management and medical administration of SRMMCHRC expressed a desire to establish research programmes and activities with help of the latest technology to bring out effective therapy for immuno-suppressed patients. T.R. Pachamuthu, founder and chairman, SRM group of institutions; P. Sathya Narayanan, Vice Chancellor of SRM Institute of Science and Technology Deemed University; and P.Ravi, Pro Chancellor, participated in the function.

Neurology unit opened

Mr. Barnala also inaugurated the neurology and neuro surgery divisions in the hospital.

He said the introduction of advancement in surgeries and patient management technologies and therapies have resulted in immuno suppression.

He called for efforts to focus on "accurate and timely diagnosis".

The Governor said as the institute was situated on a national highway, where many accidents occurred, the hospital should treat more road accident victims. To this, Mr Sathya Narayanan said plans were afoot to step up treatment of accident victims.
