Abusive e-mails: man remanded

Ahmedabad: A man, arrested in New Delhi for allegedly sending threatening and abusive e-mails to the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, was on Saturday remanded to three days' police custody by a local court.

While seeking remand before the City Sessions Court here, Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) officials said they wanted time to probe the contents of the hard disk and the laptop computer seized from the Delhi residence of the accused.

The officials also told the court that they wanted to ascertain whether he was connected with any suspicious or banned outfits operating inside or outside the country.

Omar Siddiqui was arrested with the help of Delhi police on January 26 and was brought to Ahmedabad for interrogation.

Irfan, father of the accused, has also been summoned by the Gujarat police and is expected to arrive here tonight, ATS sources said.

ATS and Delhi police team raided Siddiqui's residence in Malviya Nagar locality and seized a laptop and hard disk reportedly used for sending an e-mail to Modi on December 24 for organising the `Vibrant Gujarat-International Kite Festival' on January 12-13.

ATS officials said the father and son were well-educated and Siddiqui was a graduate from the Delhi School of Economics and worked as the Human Resources head of an outsourcing firm, while Irfan was a retired government official.— PTI
