TIRUPATI: In what could be termed a giant leap in taking education to the doorsteps of women, Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV) is planning to take the FM radio route to reach out to the rural areas, for which it is contemplating running a radio station. Following the footsteps of scores of universities and premier education centres in the country, which have their own FM radio stations to narrowcast education-oriented information to the students in their vicinity, the only all-women university in the state is learnt to have applied for the same with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The varsity is considering seeking the help of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in executing the scheme.
Audio-visual lab
For the required infrastructure and technical equipment, the authorities are planning to put to use the audio-visual laboratory, being developed by the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism with a UGC grant of Rs.15 lakhs. The laboratory already has a video camera and a digital camera, while editing equipment, costing Rs.2.5 lakhs, is expected to be procured very soon, which will make it a state-of-the-art facility that could be used for video production of features, interviews and success stories by the students. The facility will also be used by the extension departments like National Service Scheme (NSS) and Women's studies for preparing study and publicity material. Bangalore-based Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which has helped several universities in providing technical support, is expected to help SPMVV.
