MADIKERI: Kodagu Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer K. Sundar Naik has called upon National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers to start awareness camps in rural areas towards implementing the Total Sanitation scheme. He was presiding over a meeting at the Old Assembly Hall here to discuss the implementation of the scheme, an official press release said. The programme should succeed in all villages, he said and added that the role of NSS units is crucial in this regard. As many as 39,000 toilets need to constructed under the scheme in rural areas in the district, Mr. Naik said. NSS can be instrumental in motivating rural people to build toilets in their houses, he added. NSS units should organise camps in rural areas on holidays. The sanitation scheme in Kodagu will be implemented in four stages. The first stage, which has commenced, will end in March. After targeting rural households, the scheme will be implemented in anganwadi centres and educational institutions, Mr. Naik said. Manoj Kumar from the Karnataka Rural Water Supply and Drainage Board said Kodagu stands first among the districts in terms of implementation of the scheme.
