Vice-Chancellor of MKU is Colonel Commandant too

MADURAI: The Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, P. Maruthamuthu, was conferred the rank of Honorary Colonel Commandant by the National Cadet Corps (NCC) at a ceremony held here recently.

According to NCC officials, the vice-chancellors of all universities are entitled to the rank and the piping ceremony would be conducted if they were willing to accept the honour.

At the function held at Thiagarajar College in the city, Dr. Maruthamuthu, attired in the cadet uniform, was given a ceremonial guard of honour by a mixed contingent of Army and Navy cadets.

Col. Rajan Kulkarni, Group Commander-NCC Group Headquarters, Madurai, escorted the Vice-Chancellor to the podium where he was formally granted the rank of Honorary Colonel Commandant.

The Directorate General of NCC in New Delhi had asked the MKU Vice-Chancellor to accept the honour and also appreciated the role of the university in promoting the activities of cadets in the region, officials said.

V.Alagappan, university Registrar and Syndicate members of the varsity were among those who attended the ceremony.

M.Arunagiri, Principal, Thiagarajar College, welcomed the gathering and spoke about the active contribution made by the NCC.
