BJP leader allays minorities fears

Bangalore: Derek Fullinfaw, former nominated (Anglo-Indian) MLA and member of the State Executive of the BJP, has said that the imaginary fears of the minorities in the State about their party coming to power will disappear once they experience the new administration. Mr. Fullinfaw, who is also the General Secretary of the State BJP Minority Morcha, said that the "pseudo secularism" of the Congress would be exposed by the BJP-JD (S) Government to be formed in the State.

He blamed the S.M. Krishna Government for diluting the schemes for the benefit of the Anglo-Indians in particular, introduced by the Ramakrishna Hegde Government in 1985.

Farmer commits suicide

HASSAN: Marilinge Gowda (46) of Somanayakanahalli in Dandiganahalli hobli in Channarayapatna taluk ended his life by consuming poison on Saturday night, as he reportedly found it difficult to clear loans he had borrowed from the Channarayapatna Primary Land Development Bank.

The police said that Marilinge Gowda had borrowed Rs. 50,000 from the bank to cultivate his three acres of land four years ago. He had also borrowed money for farm operations from private moneylenders. On finding it difficult to clear the loans, he consumed poison on Friday night. Though he was immediately taken to the Adichunchanagiri Medical College Hospital, he could not be saved. — Staff Correspondent

Maize procurement

Belgaum: The State Government has conceded the demand of farmers and elected representatives to increase the procurement quota under Minimum Support Price scheme for maize in the district.

According to Deputy Commissioner Shalini Rajneesh here on Sunday, the Government recently started procuring maize from the farmers in the district. — Staff Correspondent

Elected to TP posts

Madikeri: S.M. D'Silva and Geeta Basappa, both of the Congress, were elected president and vice-president of the Somwarpet Taluk Panchayat at the elections held in Somwarpet on Saturday, according to information received here on Sunday.

The Congress had won 15 of the total 19 seats in the Somwarpet Taluk Panchayat in the recent elections. Though there were five aspirants for the post of president, the name of Mr. D'Silva was confirmed at the instance of Somwarpet MLA B.A. Jivijaya, sources said.

Mr. D'Silva represents the Abburkatte constituency reserved for BCM "B" while Ms. Basappa represents the Hardur constituency reserved for SC (Woman). — Staff Correspondent

Man ends life

HASSAN: Marilinge Gowda (46) of Somanayakanahalli of Dandiganahalli hobli in

Channarayapatna taluk ended his life by consuming poison on Saturday, the police said. He resorted to the act because he found it difficult to clear loans he had borrowed from the Channarayapatna Primary Land Development Bank, the police added. Citing a complaint, the police said Marilinge Gowda He had also borrowed money for agriculture purpose from private moneylenders.

Impostor held

DAVANGERE: The police on Saturday arrested a man for posing as a checking inspector of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) here. According to the police, Srinivas, who claimed to be a checking inspector of the KSRTC, was spotted by Hanumanthappa, a checking inspector of the transport corporation. After ascertaining that he was an impostor, Mr. Hanumanthappa handed him over to the police. A case has been registered. — Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: The Davangere Police have arrested three persons who were reportedly cheating people claiming that they were ayurvedic pandits. The police gave the names of the arrested persons as Lokesh, Siddesh and Durgappa, all from Gokak in Belgaum district. — Staff Correspondent

Undertrial dies

DAVANGERE: An undertrial in the Davangere sub-jail died of ill health at the General Hospital here on Saturday. The police said Abudul Sattar (41), a resident of Rajaulla Mustaf Nagar in Azadnagar police station limits in the city, was arrested on the charge of murdering his wife last December. Abdul Sattar, the police said, died of gastro-intestinal bleeding at the hospital where he was admitted a couple of days ago. — Staff Correspondent

Three killed in road accident

HASSAN: Three persons were killed, when their car collided with a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus at Vaddrahalli Gate near Shantigrama in Hassan taluk on Sunday. The police gave the names of the dead as Anantharamu (50), Nagaraj (34) and Santhosh (32). According to the police, the three died on the spot.

MYSORE: The Gandhi Bhavan at the University of Mysore has organised Sarvodaya Day celebrations from Monday. Programmes to create awareness on Gandhiji will be organised. A release said that street plays have also been organised at various places during the week. Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University J. Shashidhar Prasad will inaugurate the Sarvodaya Day programmes. The former Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University D. Jaware Gowda will inaugurate the week-long programme to create awareness on Gandhiji.

MYSORE: Canara Bank has organised a housing loan festival here from February 4. CET training

MYSORE: The Akhila Bharatheeya Vidyarthi Parishath (ABVP) has organised training classes for those appearing for the Common Entrance Test (CET) to be held across the State on May 26. MADIKERI: National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) Chief General Manager B.B. Mohanty will interact with self-help groups (SHGs) at the Kodagu District Cooperative Bank, the Chikmagalur-Kodagu Grameena Bank at Hakathur and other places, according to information received from NABARD Assistant General Manager A.L. Kulkarni.

Mr. Kulkarni said in a press release that Mr. Mohanty will meet the SHGs on Monday and visit SWASTHA, a rehabilitation centre for the physically challenged, at Sunticoppa on Tuesday.
