VIJAYAWADA: A 21-year-old man died under suspicious circumstances in police lock-up at Inagudurupeta police station in Machilipatnam, in the early hours of Sunday. Kasireddi Naresh, elder son of Appanna of Lalam Koduru village near Anakapalli, was working as a server in a hotel in Machilipatnam. The Inagudurupeta police charged him with stealing Rs. 2,000 from a `hundi' at Lakshminarayana Swami temple in Jalalapet on December 6 and Rs. 100 from a `hundi' at Kanakadurga temple in Old Ramannapeta on January 25. The police arrested Naresh on Saturday evening at Inagudurupeta, seized Rs. 1,100 and registered a theft case against him. Around 3.30 a.m. on Sunday, a constable on sentry duty found Naresh's body hanging from the ventilator of the cell. A towel was used for hanging. The constable, in turn, alerted sub-inspector of police V. Subba Raju. The SI rushed to the station and took Naresh to the Government Hospital in Machilipatnam. However, the doctors said that he was brought dead. "We allowed him to keep a towel with him to protect himself from cold weather, but he used it to hang himself," Mr. Subba Raju said. Krishna district Collector and Magistrate Navin Mittal asked Machilipatnam Revenue Divisional Officer T. Appa Rao to conduct the inquest.
