HYDERABAD : The two-day Collectors' conference commencing here on Monday will set the tone for effective implementation of major people-centric programmes taken up at the national and State levels.

The meet assumes significance as the State has gained the privilege of being chosen as the launch pad for yet another innovative programme -- National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) -- being launched on February 2.

A press note from the Chief Minister's office said the NREGS along with `Indiramma' project were aimed at bringing about a revolutionary change in rural areas and improving the living standard of people.

Considering the significance of the two programmes, two exclusive sessions have been earmarked during the conference where the guidelines, identification of beneficiaries and the plan of action would be discussed.

Keen on ensuring the success of NREGS, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy would be placing before Collectors an elaborate advisory to plug the scope for any loopholes in the implementation of the programme.

At a meeting to review the agenda for the conference, Dr. Reddy was keen that gram sabhas should be held for three days from February 2 in every habitation with the involvement of people's representatives. The services of Self-Help Groups and village organisations were sought to disseminate information to rural poor about the scheme. He wanted gram sabhas to be used to communicate information about the scheme and collect applications.
