Staff Reporter

To unveil posters, pamphlets and stickers on helpline

KOCHI: Kerala Railway Police (KRP) would be step up the campaign for the Railway Helpline 9846 200 100 in a programme to popularise the use of this number for any help that the passengers may require.

Suresh Rajpurohit, the Superintendent of KRP, would participate in a function in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan auditorium at 10 a.m. on Monday, at which pamphlets, posters and stickers on the helpline would be released. An animation film on the safety of passengers and the website of the KRP will also be launched on the occasion. The animation film will be shown at railway stations and KSRTC bus stands.

As part of popularising the KRP helpline, a mascot, hornbill, created by artist Nandan Pillai, would also seek a name from the public.

The name selected for the mascot will also provide a prize for the individual who suggested it. The mascot was launched earlier on January 21 at Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station.

The programme would be inaugurated by the artist by drawing the picture of Gandhiji, to mark the Martyr's Day. The artist will use the medium of clay, flowers and leaves to draw the picture. The helpline, launched in October 2005, has received about 1,700 calls till last week. A majority of the calls have been from women, who were travelling in the evening. The calls are attended by the personnel in the office of the Superintendent of KRP in Thiruvananthapuram and action is taken within an hour by informing the nearest Railway Police station from where any untoward incident is reported.

E. Govindan, national director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Vinay Raja Varma, director, ORGpeople, promoters of the scheme, and officials of BPL Mobile, providing technical help for the helpline, will also participate in the function.
