MADURAI : The phenomenal growth achieved in Information Technology has led to the generation of employment opportunities in the country, Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran said here on Sunday. Releasing a commemorative stamp and first day special cover in honour of freedom fighter Nattanmai Malli Rayaloo Iyer Subbaraman, he said that the dream of Madurai getting an IT park would soon be a reality once suitable land, about 25 acres, was identified. "If not 25 acres, identify at least five acres , but it should be within the city and easily accessible to the common man," he said in reply to a demand for setting up an IT park in the Temple City. Meanwhile, as a stopgap arrangement, the IT department was prepared to set up the park in one lakh square feet of space, he added. Madurai had always been a good training centre without any industries and an IT park would facilitate development. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi had urged Bill Gates, during his visit to Tamil Nadu, to for tie-ups in smaller cities such as Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchi, as it would provide job opportunities for youths, he said. With over 3.5 lakh engineering graduates passing out annually, the Ministry was in a position to create job opportunities to consolidate the growth in the sector, Mr. Maran said.Paying glowing to Subbaraman, who he described as a true Gandhian, he said the department plans to release commemorative stamps on spiritual leader Kirubananda Variar and Tamil scholar U.V. Swaminatha Iyer, in the coming months. N.M.R.K. Jawahar Baapu, patron, N.M.R.S. Centenary Committee, received the stamp while N.M.R.V. Sivaprasad, organising secretary, received the first day special cover. T.R. Dinakaran, committee president , A.G.S. Rambabu, vice-president, and S. Rethinavelu, president the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, participated.
