"Law only provides for takeover of MSO operators"

DMK chief trying to divert attention of people, says Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday denied Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi's charge that the Government was resorting to "selective takeover of cable networks."

In a statement here, she made it clear that the Tamil Nadu Acquisition, Transfer and Taking Over of the Administration of Cable Television Network (including Multiple Service Optical Transport System) Act was not aimed at taking over channel broadcasters such as Sun TV. The law only provided for the takeover of multiple service optical transport system (MSO) operators.

Referring to Mr. Karunanidhi's remark that though the DMK was not against the Government's decision, its move was "partial" as it had decided to take over control of only 10 networks out of 500 MSOs, she said the DMK president was attempting to "divert the attention of the people."

6 Corporation areas

Ms. Jayalalithaa also recalled that she had made it clear in the Assembly that the law would be implemented in all six corporation areas in the first phase and would be gradually extended to other areas.

Denying any partiality, she said the Act also provided for the takeover of the administration of the Coimbatore-based Thamizhthai Cable Vision run by persons belonging to the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

This amply proved the Government's impartiality, honesty and boldness in bringing forward the law, keeping people's interest alone in mind, she said.
