Law to regulate working of doctors planned: Anbumani

"It will make it compulsory for MBBS graduates to work in rural areas for a year"

ERODE: The Centre will introduce a legislation to regulate the working of doctors, Union Health Minister R. Anbumani has said. On completion of house surgeoncy, it will be made compulsory for the MBBS graduates to work in rural areas for a year, he told reporters here on Sunday. The country needed more doctors and there was no move to ban private practice of doctors working in government hospitals.

Training scheme

He said once in five years, doctors would be trained under the Continuing Medical Education programme. After that they would be re-registered.

The Centre was concentrating on rural health and prevention of AIDS by investing huge money on rural health. Under the National Rural Health Mission programme, Rural Health Centres were started in all States, especially in backward ones like Bihar.

Appointment of nurses

It had been decided to appoint 2 lakh nurses in rural areas. Through them, the Government would take steps to reduce infant and maternal mortality.

He said every year, the Health Ministry was spending Rs 10 lakhs to Rs. 1 crore on each taluk hospital in the country. This year, Rs. 7,000 crore was granted for health care.

It would be raised to Rs. 10,000 crore in the coming financial year.

He wanted doctors, especially those running infertility centres, to follow medical ethics.

Sufficient medicines were being provided to all hospitals. All rural hospitals would be modernised by providing sufficient doctors, increasing blood storage facilities and modernising operation theatres.

The Centre was taking steps to streamline the prices of drugs, especially essential ones.
