KURNOOL: Minister for Lift Irrigation M. Mareppa has said nodal officers and other officials would conduct gram sabhas between February 6 and 12 as part of implementation of model villages plan. Talking to reporters here on Sunday, he said 326 villages were identified for development under the model villages project in Kurnool district in the first phase by earmarking an amount of Rs. 445 crores. After three years, the Government did not want to have any family without a house and any village with infrastructure deficiencies. He said Kurnool district was sanctioned over a dozen lift irrigation schemes.

Mr. Mareppa said Kurnool district would get the National Employment Guarantee programme in the next phase. The programme was being implemented in all districts except eight in the State. Mr. Mareppa was named in charge of Mahabubnagar district for the scheme. The Minister said the Government had spent huge sums of money in one year what the TDP did in ten years for development of irrigation. An amount of Rs. 8,000 crores was earmarked for irrigation and Rs. 300 crores lift irrigation. Mr. Mareppa said specific problems in some parts of the district like fluoride would be tackled.
