KANNUR: Pondicherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy will lay the foundation stone for the prestigious Rs.23-crore Mahe fishing harbour project at Mahe on January 31. Announcing this at a press conference here on Saturday, Pondicherry Health Minister and Mahe MLA E. Valsaraj said that the Central-aided project was the biggest ever development project being implemented in Mahe after its liberation from the French. While the estimated project cost would be totally borne by the Central Government, the State Government had to bear 30 per cent of the anticipated cost escalation, he said. The work was expected to be completed in 18 months, he added. Stating that the project would mark a leap in the development of the nine sq. km. area having a population of 35,000, Mr. Valsaraj said that the long cherished dream of fishermen in the region had been given clearance by the Centre in 2005. Mr. Valsaraj said that the project provided opportunity for the overall development of the Mahe region. The project, once completed, was expected to create an opportunity for commercial relationship between Mahe and Lakshadweep, the Minister pointed out. Pondicherry Fisheries and Local Administration Minister A. Elumalai, Agriculture Minister A. Namassivayam and Parliamentary secretary to Chief Minister A.V. Sreedharan will attend the foundation laying ceremony.
