Delhi Metro begins extension work of Phase II

Corporation has decided to strengthen its operational activities

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has commenced work on extending the Metro by 53 kilometres in Phase II for extending the existing lines up to Mundka, Anand Vihar (ISBT), New Ashok Nagar, Dilshad Garden, Jahagirpuri and IIT. While the geo technical investigation, soil survey, land acquisition and construction has begun in some areas, the tenders have been prepared and floated for other portions as well.

Further, the DMRC spokesperson said on Sunday that with Phase I of the Delhi Metro having been completed and 56 kms of corridor having been made operational -- with 53 trains carrying up to 5 lakh passengers daily -- the Corporation management has decided to strengthen its operational and maintenance activities. And a post of Director (Operations) to head the operational activities and he will be assisted by three General Managers who will be responsible for operations, maintenance and finance respectively.

The DMRC said the work has been instituted keeping in view the need to revamp the structure of the organization as passenger interface, 24-hour operations and all-night maintenance require full fledged and dedicated attention keeping in view the complexities of the Delhi Metro operational system which has adopted the most advanced signalling and fare collection systems and rolling stock available the world over.

But despite striving for high level of professionalism, the DMRC said it would continue to keep an optimum and efficient staff level of employing only 45 persons per route km in keeping with international practices by adopting multi-skill techniques, efficient manpower utilization and automation in many activities to keep operational costs low.

The construction wing of the Delhi Metro, it said, now has about 450 persons and is concentrating on completion of Phase-I extension of 9.31 kms entering Dwarka subcity and Indraprastha by March and June this year respectively.
