  • Israel, Taiwan teams lend international touch
  • 25,000 farmers from various parts of the country visited the fair

PRIZE-WINNER: HUDA Vice-Chairman Jayesh Ranjan receiving an award from Speaker Suresh Reddy at the horticultural show at People's Plaza on Necklace Road on Sunday.

HYDERABAD: The five-day Horticulture Trade Fair-2006 at People's Plaza came to a close with Assembly Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy calling for extending such shows to other districts and enlightening farmers.

Mr. Reddy said horticulture provided tremendous scope for farmers, and the department should make extra efforts to reach to untapped farmers. People have become choosy with a variety spread in front of them and this provided an opportunity for farmers to experiment and get good money for the produce. He appreciated the efforts of the department and private parties involved in spreading greenery around the city.

On a lighter note, he said the Assembly could not bag any prize while other Government departments got prizes in different categories. However, next year Assembly gardens would give some competition to others. Earlier, he distributed prizes to organisations and individuals for maintenance of gardens in various categories.

Anil Punetha, Director of Horticulture said 170 stalls were put up at the fair in which people from Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, J & K, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal participated. Teams from Israel and Taiwan lent the international touch. He said 25,000 farmers from various parts of the country visited the fair and got first hand knowledge about the prospects horticulture provided to them. He said orders amounting to Rs. 23.50 were received including Rs. 3.50 crores trade at the fair itself.

Some of the awardees included MCH (highest entries in garden festival), K. Raheja IT Park (best garden by private institutions) MCEME Gardens (best gardens maintained by military), DRDO (best garden maintained by defence organisations), RTA (best garden maintained by State Government institutions), SVP National Police Academy (best garden maintained by Central Government institutions), HUDA - NTR Garden (best garden maintained by Government undertakings, Alka Sanghi, Sanghi Nagar (best kitchen garden), T.
