CHENNAI: Some 250 residents of Thirumalai Nagar in the southern suburb of Sembakkam gathered in front of the village panchayat office on Sunday to press their demands for better civic amenities including the laying of a motorable road.

Layout formed in 1970

The residents said they were agonised over the indifferent attitude of the authorities.

They had been pressing for better roads for more than a decade now.

"The layout was formed in 1970. It has more than 700 residents now but even lacks roads to walk all these years," said M. Ranganathan, secretary, Thirumalai Nagar Residents Welfare Association.

V.M. Khaja Mohideen, president, said: "Our area was one of the worst-affected wards in Sembakkam during the rains last month, as surplus water from Sembakkam and Nanmangalam lakes flooded our streets and made the residents immobile for a few days."

Despite this, their names were left out of the list for flood relief, prepared by the village administrative officer, the residents said.

The association office-bearers submitted a memorandum to executive officer of the panchayat G. Dhanasekaran.

The crowd dispersed on being assured by the official that the remainder of the works would begin before the announcement of Assembly elections.

He said he would also forward their demand for flood relief to the revenue officials.
