Coop banks `lack' transparency

Recently, president of Andhra Pradesh Urban and Town Cooperative Banks' Association M. Anjaneyulu found fault with the State Government and Reserve Bank of India for the poor performance of urban cooperative banks. It is not proper to make such remarks because there is no basic transparency in Urban Coop. Banks (UCB) functioning.

To create confidence in UCBs, the RBI and the State Government should consider appointing their own nominees as directors and ensure that the guidelines are followed in toto without any deviation.

Railway reservation

This has reference to reports that the passengers in waiting list will have the privilege of getting accommodation in higher classes without extra charges. No doubt this helps passengers. But there is scope for malpractices. I would like to cite my own experience with Western Railway, Mumbai.

I went along with a friend to the Mumbai central station to book tickets to New Delhi in Tatkal quota. The booking clerk did not accept my identity card. Then we returned to our hotel near VT station. The lodge boy who heard our discussions said he would be able to get it within 24 hours provided we paid Rs. 500 extra on each ticket. And he kept his promise.

Telephone bill in paise

The telephone tariff of the BSNL at the PT/STD booths is very inconvenient and causes loss to the consumers as well as the department. One wonders why the unit rate is fixed at Rs. 1.33 paise or Rs. 1.36 when there is no currency note or coins available in such denominations. The department may fix the unit rate for a call at Re.1 or Rs.1.50 inclusive of taxes.

House-sites for Government staff

The dairy farm land of the Government on either side of the NH-5 at Hanumanthawaka is prime land in the city at Rs. 20,000 per sq. yd. Of late, there were reports that it might be allotted to private entrepreneurs at Rs. 2 crores per acre while the present market rate is around Rs. 5 crores. It is learnt that the Animal Husbandry Department employees of the district have sought 18.5 acres on the eastern side of NH-5 for their residential colony. Many of the employees are said to have already sold away the sites likely to be allotted to them as they would net about Rs. 50 lakhs each due to the high cost of land. Is the Government willing to allot such costly land to its employees or will it have a rethink on the issue?

Post-office in a

cattle shed

Suryaraopeta post-office in Kakinada was shifted from Tilak Road to a cattle shed beside Bhemeeswaraswamy temple in temple street.

The main entrance of the post-office is low and narrow. The narrow path is often used by some to answer calls of nature. The authorities should immediately shift the post-office to a better place.
